Toward a Foundational Hydro Ontology for Water Data Interoperability

چکیده

Hydro ontologies are digital artifacts that contain representations of hydrological entities. They are being constructed to advance interoperability within and between all kinds of water data networks. Increased growth of such networks, however, requires integration of a greater variety of data, which requires a more general and principled approach to hydro ontology. One such approach is the development of a canonical reference ontology. This paper describes recent progress on the development of a reference hydro ontology for both subsurface and surface water data. Identified is a container schema that anchors the ontology, and also described is an initial representation of the ontology.

Enabling RadLex with the Foundational Model of Anatomy Ontology to Organize and Integrate Neuro-imaging Data

In this study we focused on empowering RadLex with an ontological framework and additional content derived from the Foundational Model of Anatomy Ontology 1 thereby providing RadLex the facility to correlate the different standards used in annotating neuroradiological image data. The objective of this work is to promote data sharing, data harmonization and interoperability between disparate neu...

The Foundational Ontology Library ROMULUS

A purpose of a foundational ontology is to solve interoperability issues among domain ontologies and they are used for ontologydriven conceptual data modelling. Multiple foundational ontologies have been developed in recent years, and most of them are available in several versions. This has re-introduced the interoperability problem, increased the need for a coordinated and structured compariso...

The Void in Hydro Ontology

Voids are extremely important to water science, because their size and connectivity determines the storage and flow of water both above and below the ground surface. While previous formal theories about voids strictly consider holes hosted inside objects, we generalize voids to also include spaces between objects, and distinguish voids in macroscopic objects from those occurring microscopically...

An empirical assessment of the use of foundational ontologies in ontology development

There is an assumption that ontology developers will use a top-down approach by using a foundational ontology, because it purportedly speeds up ontology development and improves quality and interoperability of the domain ontology. Informal assessment of these assumptions reveals ambiguous results that are not only open to different interpretations but also such that foundational ontology usage ...

Feasibility of Automated Foundational Ontology Interchangeability

While a foundational ontology can solve interoperability issues among the domain ontologies aligned to it, multiple foundational ontologies have been developed. Thus, there are still interoperability issues among domain ontologies aligned to different foundational ontologies. Questions arise about the feasibility of linking one’s ontology to multiple foundational ontologies to increase its pote...
